Ooh this is interesting. According to a study conducted by Oakland University, those like being friends with their exes often have “darker personality traits” and are “more manipulative” than others.
Stylist.co.uk says scientists discovered this information by having over 800 volunteers list five reasons they would stay friends with an ex-partner, and through these reasons they were able to see what individuals exuded strong “dark triad” traits of “narcissism, psychopathy and/or Machiavellianism.”
The study showed that some people liked to remain friends with their exes for “sentimental reasons” while others did it for “‘strategic advancement’ – and to increase their likelihood of getting sex in the future.” They also said they stayed friends with their exes because it was “more practical” than ending the relationship completely.
Narcissism expert Dr. Tony Ferretti told Broadly:
“May stay connected to [to exes in order to] have access to valuable resources. They also have inside information about their exes vulnerabilities and weaknesses that they can exploit and manipulate which gives them a sense of power and control.”
